Clash of two biggies - Taare Zameen Par and Welcome

Two really big movies are clashing this week- TODAY that is. But luckily we are spared the hype that was generated during Diwali by Om Shanti Om and Sawariyaan. Man - that was a big let down wasn't it. I still haven't seen Saawariyan, but am not expecting much. But I may still catch it. While I din't find OSO all that great though it was funny in parts. And i Liked the 70's look. All in all a good laugh.

Of the two releases today, I think both should do well, as Aamir Khan has a loyal following while Welcome show cases the current red hot favorite Akshay Kumar. Anything Akshay touches turns to gold. So I am counting on that to make Welcome into a really good blockbuster. Add to that the odd couple of Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar and a sizzling Mallika Sherawat. Paresh Rawal completes the star packed ensemble.

Other two releases are Bombay to Bangkok and Sunday.

TZP has the ever dependable (kindly ignore Mangal Mangal Mangal....) Aamir and a very sensitive and meaningful story. The look seems fabulous and I already am feeling a bit emotional. The Kid looks lovable and the songs are soulful. So how can it
miss?

My view is give the audience two good films and they will watch both. Right na????

But this didn't work out for Laaga Chunari Mein Daag as the prescence of other movies hits its prospects badly.

It holiday time with Sunday!!!!

Audiences are waiting to see if Sunday will join the increasing number of films that have hit the bullseye with comedy being the engine that drives them. Sunday has an eclectic starcast ofAyesha Takia, Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Irfan Khan, Esha Deol and Anjana Sukhani.

Ajay and Arshad have proved thir mettle with comedy earlier with fils like Ishq, Golmaal and Munnabhai series and Dhamaal respectively. It will be interesting to see how Irfan Khan manages comedy, despite him being a great actor. He does have a quirky sense of humor and relies on his tone to make a scene effective as opposed to making silly faces. The ladies are pretty and add to the glamour quotient of the movie. Heres hoping to a fun Sunday with these stars.

Dus Kahaniyaan - Make way for the new multi-story movie

I'm waiting for the release of Dus Kahaniyaan. It seems to be packaged well, but one can never say for any product from Bollywood. And the spin machines work over time in churning out reels and reels of stories about the coming movie. And all of the releases seem to have a great look, or carry excellent reports. its only when it gets released when audiences realise that they have been taken for a ride.

Dus Kahaniyaan is following the same practise of other big releases this diwali like OSO and Saawariya by making its stars attend TV shows, public functions and using the TV to bombard viewers with the slew of beauties they have top lined in teh movie. I must say Masumi Makhija is looking really good. I liked her in Maqbool and hope this movie works for her.

Some of the stories are barely 12 minutes long and I have my reservations whether Indian story tellers can tell a story within that time frame, effectively that is.

Anyway, lets wait and......watch.

The Big Diwali Clash - Om Shanti Om and Sawaariya

It has really been hogging the public mindspace as well as the TV channels, not to mention reams and reams of newsprint. I am sure all the time and attention could have been used for other more important issues, but never mind. The movies have finally been released and now we have to bear the after math. We have different channels informing us that Om Shanti Om has beaten Saawariya fair and square. And rebuttals from the Saawariya camp that the media is being used to hamper the success of Saawariya.

I watched Om Shanti Om last week and found it pretty average. Though i loved the retro look and era of the movie. The problem is Shahrukh. He is again Shahrukh in the movie. He doesn't attempt to act or get into the character. Its a typical Shahrukh effort. Gags, and twisted faces, smug looks, mannerisms and hand movements. As usual he mistakes it for acting. But the look, the gags and a very able Shreyas Talpade ensure it is entertaining. And add to that a gorgeous Deepika Padukone and you can't go wrong.

The second half drops a bit (as many people have complained) inspite of the six pack. I did like the climax though. Was not really expecting it.

Go watch it without too many expectations and you may enjoy it. And of course if you are a Shahrukh fan like many silly girls are, you will find it mindboggling.
